ABOUT Monica
Aloha, I’m Monica!
I live in Hawaii, with my husband, and our four sons.
Here are the oldest three (photo taken about two years ago, but it’s a favorite.
)
We call kids like these “grommets,” or “groms.” This usually refers to kids who skate/surf/do board sports.
My boys are surfers and skate boarders. Among other things.
And here’s little Levi:
He’ll turn three in May. He mostly loves tractors. And making me feel too old to raise a toddler.
I am married to Dave–doctor by trade, Grom Dad in every fiber of his being.
I’m blessed and very grateful.
We are often accused of “living the dream,” and yes, I suppose we are. However, if you read a post or two, it will be clear that we have the same challenges and struggles as everyone else. And we don’t try to hide that for a minute. Going through those challenges while living in paradise however…might help just a little. And because of that, I hope to share a little of this paradise with every person who visits this site!
As for our family life: We live up-country, on the North Shore of Oahu…Our home is on a hill overlooking the “Seven Mile Miracle,”–7 miles of amazing beaches, boasting some of the best surf spots in the world. On our property, we grow all kinds of tropical fruits, as well as mac nuts, coconuts, and plenty of other things I still haven’t found a name for. I home school our four boys, which sometimes makes me crazy, but absolutely helps support their surfing and skateboarding habits. We spend a lot of time at the beach, at surf contests, and at skate parks. We take a lot of photos and somehow get ourselves in some ridiculous adventures as we go…So that’s a lot of what you’ll find here.
(another photo from over a year ago. I’ll update these eventually.
)
As for me: I love God, and am blown away by all of His grace in my life. I love to be with people, and since I don’t get out a lot, I am extremely grateful for the connections I make through blogging and social media.
I like good coffee, running trails, and date nights. I find cooking therapeutic, and cleaning a drag. I’m mostly disorganized, but still have hope for change. I laugh easily, and have a weakness for juvenile humor, and ridiculousness.
I have a slight obsession with my bangs, and the IDEA of growing them out. (It’ll never happen,) and I love style even though most of the time we live in shorts and slippahs (flip flops.) Every once in a while I try my hand at sharing some style posts–either of me, or one of my handsome guys.
I’m aware of my many weaknesses, and thankful for unconditional love.
I LOVE family, relationships, and focusing on being better at these things every single day. I also am passionate about encouraging others in the same things.
So while you’re here, I do hope you’ll look around!
At Surf and Skate , you’ll see posts related to my groms surfing and skating. I also link up to other hot groms and things going on here in Hawaii in the surf and skate community.
At Healthy Lifestyle ,you will find some of the things I feed this family of growing boys. I try to post at least one recipe a week.
At Inspiration , you will find some posts related to my faith, or other simply inspiring things. I share my passion for parenting and marriage, and sometimes for things related to healthy living.
At Home and Country, I share some of the fun things going on here at our new home. Since we moved to this new house in the summer of 2011, we’ve had one project after another going on…So this is where you can see the dirt, follow the projects, and find out what fruit is being harvested now.
Daily, you’ll find a bit of random story telling, some good laughs (usually at our expense,) and a lot of North Shore Aloha. If you read this blog for a while, and then start planning a vacation–you won’t be the first!
I’m working on a page with links to all of my North Shore Favorites, so that is where to look if you’ll be visiting the island. Keep checking back to watch that grow!
I want to thank you for taking time to stop by my site. This blog keeps me connected and sane…Your comments make me smile. I thank God for this place where I can share some of the amazing life He’s given me with all of you! Please leave a comment and tell me where you’re visiting from!
Aloha, and Mahalo!

Aloha! We haven’t even been gone 24 hours and we miss the beach! Thanks so much for the hospitality and letting me peek back at Haleiwa Surf! A hui hou….
Hi grommom–sorry I wasn’t your first to comment. Very good,so far. You’re a fun writer. Makes me want to be your neighbor! Keep up the good work. Love to all the little groms!!
Just found your blog when I was googling (sp?) how to make rice krispy sushi treats and I just love your blog! I think I love it even more because I have been on this Hawaii kick (never been) since watching Soul Surfer. I am at work and have only been able to read a few posts but have loved all of them. I look forward to reading the ones I have missed. I saw your category on health and healthy recipes and can’t wait to check it out since I am on a journey to a healthy lifestyle change! Have a great week!
Thank you so much! Glad you found my blog, and I also will check out your site! We all loved Soul Surfer–we’ve met Bethany Hamilton and think she is amazing. (my boys have surfed with her.
) Stay in touch and hopefully you can make it to Hawaii someday soon!
Monica! How nice to meet you! I am so glad that you stumbled across my blog. I don’t often meet other mothers of four boys. Our boys are 11, 8.5, 5.5, and a nearly 2 year old. We also thought we were done after 3. Our climates couldn’t be more different, but we live in the woods, so we are outdoorsy people, too. We love to hike, explore, and spend our summers at the beach. I look forward to knowing you better through your blog.
Thank you so much! My boys are very similar ages! 11, 9, 7, and 1. ha! Yes, we could talk, couldn’t we!?
Take care–
One of my boys’ favorite things is when we visit my folks in Washington State and they take us to the mountains where they can romp in the woods! I’m sure they’d find your boys’ lives so interesting. I’ll be keeping up!
I’m so glad you found my blog, because it led me to yours and I’m really enjoying it. We went to Oahu for our honeymoon, like half of America probably, so it is a special place for us that we’d love to return to one day. I can relate to the temporary living situation. We went through a similar situation selling our house in Chicago and moving here. It all worked out in the end, but it was definitely stressful during the process. I hope your move goes well and I hope you’ll still be able to get to the beach often in your new place. Keep us posted!
hi monica,( gorgeous mom)! I will definitely miss you if you quit blogging.
Sometimes, I love reading than writing and I love reading your blog. No drama whatsoever, just life!
totally stumbled on your blog today. Never met you in my life but its brilliant to see people who love God living life to the full. great blog.
I’m new to blogging too (and I lead a VERY different life to you), but I enjoyed having a flick around (and doing more than just looking at the pics).
keep it up!

Found your Blog through Christies “Suger Shegan” blog. We met here while staying at the condos in Haleʻiwa in Feb. last year. I have two boys 8 & 14, Cody & Wyatt. So fun reading your blog. Hope to someday start one of my own. If you see Christie tell her the Barber family from North Bend, Wa. says “Hello”.
Oh Yes–I remember!! I’ll tell Christie for sure. Thanks so much for commenting! I hope you’re getting some summer (finally!) in Washington! Take care and say hi anytime!

Hi Monica,
I just stumbled across your blog, and so happy I did. I’m originally from Oahu – grew up in Mililani, Aiea, Kahala, and Kaimuki. I moved away after I graduated from UH Manoa, and now live in San Diego. Now my husabnd and I are considering a move back to Hawaii to raise our three boys. My husband is an avid surfer too and he’d love to get the boys more involved with surfing. Funny that I had considered homeschooling too. Would love to connect.
Thanks! Tracey
