Aloha!
Welcome to my very first planned, scheduled, Tasty Tuesday Post! Not only am I following through with my PLAN to post something FOOD related today, but I’m even creating an entire new venue in the world of food…
And I’m calling it:

“Grommeals”–tasty, healthy, meals, for on-the-go kids!
And today’s recipe fits that definition SO perfectly I can hardly stand it.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve tried again and again to buy those packets of “instant oatmeal” only to be disappointed with a lack of texture, AND taste. So up until now my only solution has been to cook large batches of real oats, then refrigerate them to be heated in the microwave later. And that’s been…okay. But my boys don’t get really excited to eat re-heated oats, especially if they’ve become a little on the slimy/gooey side. You know what I’m talking about?
SO, when I happened to open Martha Stewart Living’s October issue, and saw this idea, I had to hurry home and try it. And I think it’s pretty much brilliant!
To prepare: (about six servings.)
Pour 4 cups of real oats onto a rimmed baking sheet, and bake at 350 deg. for about 15 minutes. (Toasted, but not browned.)
Let cool. Then place oats into a food processor and and pulse it until coarse. (Be careful, over-grinding can happen easily and the texture is not as good.)
Next mix in 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 1 tsp. coarse salt, and 1/2 teaspoon ( I like more) cinnamon. Then choose up to a cup of your favorite mix-ins…We love nuts, shredded coconut, raisins or other dried fruit, and flaxseeds. Place it all in an airtight container for up to two weeks.
To serve: Place a serving of oatmeal mixture into a bowl and pour boiling water over it until desired consistency is reached. Let stand a minute or two, top with a bit of milk if desired, and ENJOY!
My boys LOVE the freedom of helping themselves to the oats, stirring in the hot water (obviously younger kiddos need a hand with the hot water part,) and “making their own oatmeal.”
I LOVE that they are getting a lot more nutrition, NO preservatives or chemicals, and saving us a lot of money!

Hope you try it and let me know how it goes!
Be healthy, and blessed, and have a great day!
