I couldn’t resist sharing that when I found it on Pinterest–(from Fitworkshop. ;))
***Coffee giveaway winners announced at the end of this post!**
I have officially been training for the New York ING Marathon for one week now. I have six weeks to go before the big day. (if you missed the announcement, start here.)
Here’s a little summary of how things are going so far.
BIG/quick changes: In a nutshell, my running has gone from an average of 11 miles a week for the last few years, to 27 miles this last week. That’s a big jump. Obviously my mileage will need to go up even more to be prepared for a marathon, but as we all know…I don’t exactly have much time, so I’m trying to find the balance between being prepared, and NOT getting injured.
Here’s what I did last week:
SUNDAY: Six mile run with my friend Gretchen. 8.5 min/mile. It was really hard on me, because I am not used to running w/ someone (we talk the entire way, of course! ) and six felt REALLY LONG. Scared me.
MONDAY: Hot yoga. Big goal: Avoid injuries.
TUESDAY: Five mile run up my normally hilly route. Felt pretty good.
WEDNESDAY: Three mile run w/ Dave up the hilly route. (i love the chance to run w/ dave!( Stretch a lot.
THURSDAY: Rest. Stretch, stretch, stretch.
FRIDAY: Four mile flat run in Haleiwa. Felt really good and strong.
SATURDAY: 10 mile run on bike path down by the ocean. Averaged 9.05 min/mile. That includes about a 2 minute walk where I sucked down some GU (runner gel–comes in a mini packet.) I paused my Garmin once to go to the bathroom and drink water from a fountain. This run felt pretty good. The further I got into it the more my confidence built. The GU seemed to do ok in my system (I have friends who say it makes them sick,) and overall I felt decent. Needed a big nap later, and felt mildly sore the day after. Surprisingly ok though.
What makes me excited about the marathon?
Autumn in New York!!?? Dreamy!!!
**I am LOVING the feeling of training for something. It’s been so long, I almost forgot the energy and excitement I feel when I’m officially “in training!”
**My friend Gretchen has decided to join us in New York for the marathon! I love her and will have so much fun with her there!
**New York!! I can’t wait to see the city. (And eat the food–guilt free, haha!)
**Running gear: I think I have to get this Nike running Skirt. SO cute! Maybe i need some new running glasses? Don’t you agree that you workout better when you feel great in what you’re training in? I’ve been wearing the same workout clothes for years now. I’m thinking I’ll be asking for some fresh new gear for my birthday in October!
What makes me ANXIOUS about the marathon:
**Running 26.2 miles! (obvious.)
**My bangs (don’t judge.) There is NO cute way to wear bangs when you’re sweating your head off. And no–looking cute isn’t my first priority, but it still matters. Doesn’t it?
**Sleep. NY is six hours ahead of our time zone. Which means when I arrive there, I will be entirely consumed with the idea of getting onto a good sleep schedule. This will NOT be easy. It should help that I am the worlds best sleeper, but still–the idea of it all makes me very nervous.
**Bathroom issues: (don’t read this if you don’t like potty talk.) I have a certain “morning routine” which involves coffee and Etc..It seriously stresses me out to think of being on such a different time zone, travelling, and, well…I want the morning of the marathon to be *just right*, if you know what I mean…This might be a sign that I’m getting old, because I don’t think I thought much about these things in my early running years!
**Your’re welcome for that “too much information” segment.
**Terrorists. I’m just being honest. After the Boston Marathon last year, how could I NOT think about it a little bit. Trying not to.
This next week I plan to keep training with 3 or 4 moderate runs, and one long run on Saturday–HOPING for 12 miles.
I need to keep stretching–and trying to get into more yoga classes.
I’m trying to eat healthy. More focus on making the calories count.
I’ll try to keep my marathon training updates coming on Mondays. Just six more weeks then I can shut up about it all.
One more Pin I found…I love this. A marathon theme verse…and I love the phrase at the bottom too!
COFFEE TIME!! Thank you all for your FUN coffee talk…There is a lot of variety of coffee preferences and plenty of good stories represented here! I love you all! I only wish I could sit down with each of you over a nice cuppa!
