Do you read magazines?
I don’t.
I mean, not like I used to. I really do love magazines–I think they are a most wonderful idea: Less committment than I book, full of color and bite-sized articles that you can leaf through and carry anywhere. I truly hope that the internet doesn’t completely overtake the magazine industry, because there really is nothing like kicking back and flipping through a magazine, with a cup of iced tea and no interruptions. I mean…If my memory serves me correctly. (I’m pretty sure I did that kind of thing about fourteen years ago.) Now I get a few magazines in the mail, and they stack up on my coffee table calling out to me daily. But it’s a rare day that I get to flip through them.
Until last week. Just before we boarded the airplane last week, I had the crazy impulse to stop and buy a fitness magazine. That really was a crazy idea, because–What mother traveling with four boys has it in her crazy head that she might actually read a magazine? But indeed, at some point when Dave was keeping Levi busy and happy, I did crack that thing open. And it was a most pleasant forty-five seconds of my life. It was so nice, that since I’ve been home, I’ve reminded myself to flip through it a few more times.
And here’s what caught my attention: This particular magazine (The October issue of Fitness,) has a sprinkling of random NUMBERS throughout it. These numbers are attached to little facts that jump out at you and then you can’t help but read each one of them.
Here’s a few:
47: The age at which you’re too old to wear a bikini, poll respondents say.
93: Percentage of women who wash their hands after using public restrooms…compared with:
77: Percent of men. (ick!)
59: Number of extra M&M’s consumed when the candies were served in a large bowl instead of a small one.
(Fascinating, right?)
But of course this got me thinking, about some numbers of my own. So here’s my numbers:
42: The number of years old I’ll be next Tuesday.
22: The number of years old I think I am.
283: Number of times a day that Levi says “MOM!”
1201: Number of times Levi has watched his favorite Youtube Tractor Video.
6: Number of hours I slept last night.
2: Number of cups of coffee I have every morning.
1: Number of cups of coffee I have most afternoons.
11: Number of minutes in my average power nap.
30: Seconds it takes me to fall asleep, day or night.
5: Number of statements I just made that have to do with sleep or coffee.
2: Average time we are finished with school each day.
5: Number of minutes it takes us to get to the nearest beach.
81: Average temperature of our ocean this month.
13: Number of surf boards currently in our garage.
Now that I’ve finished that second cup of coffee, excuse me while I head down to that warm ocean and watch my boys play on their surfboards. Aloha to you all, and see you tomorrow for…Do you remember? Healthy Thursdays! (I really want to rename these theme days–feel free to offer suggestions.
)

Aloha!!
